Apple is notorious for secrecy on its production processes; Experts believe it hinders progress of its AI technology development

As Apple aims to drive forward with its artificial intelligence (AI) program, the reluctance to publish its research adversely affects the speed of its technology being developed. Experts in Canada believe that lack of two-way communication for sharing AI information hampers its development. Whereas, external AI professional are unable to become part of the development team and enhance the technology. The discrete operating manner prevents its researchers from presenting their papers on tech-based conferences. At Neural Information Processing Systems conference last year in Montreal, the iPhone maker’s absence was quite prominent, while rivals such as IBM, Microsoft, and Google made the best out the moment and presented their AI research.

Its researchers are also restricted from posting any updates pertaining to AI projects on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn. Some team members are even prevented to interact with counterparts inter- or intra-departments. This obsession with secrecy can be attributed to perceived threats from rivals who might copy Apple’s models.

Another threat to AI program is the obsession with privacy. Academics believe that machine learning needs to crunch huge data amounts for pattern identification, but the company’s commitment to consumer privacy forces it to place low limits on data sent from iPhones to cloud-based server. In fact, recent acquisitions of artificial intelligence start-up–Perceptio–will allow limit the smartphones data sent to Cloud-based server from AI intelligence.

Apple has already expanded its AI research team by hiring top ex Microsoft researchers and by acquiring Perceptio and VocalIQ. However, if it really wants to boost its AI program, there is a need to open up and pool its research with all global AI experts.
