Google have made yet another step towards funding AI research and revealed that they will extend their funding for the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) by a total of about $3.4 million in order to fund seven faculty members across the institute, and the MILA faculty at the University of Montreal and McGill University.

The company revealed the news on its blog Monday, saying that they are aiming to help tackle some of the biggest challenges in machine learning and artificial intelligence, including systems enabled to understand and generate natural language.

“Google is expanding its academic support of deep learning at MILA, renewing Yoshua Bengio’s Focused Research Award and offering Focused Research Awards to MILA faculty at University of Montreal and McGill University”, the blog post reads. “Pascal Vincent, Aaron Courville, Christopher Pal, Doina Precup, Joelle Pineau, Simon Lacoste-Julien, and Laurent Charlin. These awards taken together, for a period of 3 years, bring Google’s total donation to MILA (bridging University of Montreal and McGill) to a total of $4.5 million ($3.375M USD)”.

The new agreement does not stop there, as Google has also decided to open a deep learning AI research group in their Montreal Office that is linked to  the Google Brain team in Mountain View, California. Leading the research group will be Hugo Larochelle, a deep learning community leader who is returning from Boston to Montreal.

Montreal has now, with this addition and the AI start-up community and substantial government funding to the IVADO hub for data science, deep learning and operations research, become a global machine intelligence powerhouse, the blogpost writes.

“University of Montreal and McGill together now prides themselves with more than 150 researchers (including students) in deep learning, which adds up to the largest academic concentration in the world”.
